The January Rush

January for the online recruitment world is always a very busy time.
In our early days at Jobsite (1995) we formed all sorts of different opinions as to why the traffic on our websites gets an enormous boost at the start of the year. These were the days when we were using 9.6k modems and the idea of a 28.8k connection just didn't exist.
Talking about modems, I had the pleasure of writing the software which ran the Iron Maiden fan club for the sanctuary group back in pre-www days. I remember my first genuine use for a modem was to connect to Compuserve and send a tiny little bug fix to the guy who ran the system there. The modem ran at about 300 baud and the file upload took all night long!! Well it saved a trip to London and got the fix to the customer in record time. They were the days...
Anyway I digress. With the January traffic puzzle I remember someone coming up with the idea that the traffic boost must be related to Christmas presents. The idea was that everyone was getting modems for Christmas and connecting and therefore boosting our traffic figure.
Well, here we are in 2007 and we STILL get huge boosts in traffic in January and we are pretty sure it must be more to do with new year resolutions rather than computer equipment for Christmas. Good luck with your job hunting and hopefully you are all sticking with your resolutions.
More than I can say for my promise to use more of the Gym.

It could be a follow on effect from pre-Xmas office parties which can reveal a lot about co-workers and managers. The result could be a lot of thought over the Xmas break and some 1st of January action. Though in my case it was discovering that my manager submitting a request to extend my contract was it became more temporary than originaly anticipated.

Derek,
I agree that this would also be a contributing factor. There's probably several reasons behind it but I can't help thinking the major driver is the annual urge for change we all experience at this time.
