Selling myself

Interview question - February 22, 2008

I have a tendency to play myself down. I'm going for a senior position that I know I can do well but I tend to think it's too far over my head. How can I manage this in front of my prospective new boss and remain confident?

Please could you help. Sadly I have not been working in over a year, I have had lots of interviews but up-to date I have not had an offer of a job.

Sometimes the feedback I am getting is that I am not selling myself, I am now losing confidence, please advise me.

Selling yourself is a common point in interviews that everyone can struggle with.

That is why on BeMyInterviewer.co.uk we have devoted a whole section to questions and answers to help you sell yourself.

Play the questions, and then see what advice the interviewers have to give by clicking the 'answer' button below the video screen.

Hope that helps, you might find them really useful.

I go through the job specification and highlight those areas where I am suitable for the role and then I review the document.

At the pre-application stage, I will have decided to myself that I can do most of, if not all of the job, so now I am addressing specifics. At the review stage I look at what I've highlighted. There should be a minimum of 85-90% highlighted, and I would guess that few people will be a 100% fit.

Mentally, I am then prepared for the interview. I am mostly suited for the job, so any questions arising from those areas I've not highlighted, I will have concentrated on learning as much as I can about, and have some intelligent responses ready.

I have been out of work for over a year and I am having problems with interviews. I not able to express myself fully, including when it come to selling myself I undermine my skills and experience.

Please offer some advice, having worked at a blue chip retail company and progressed to management level I was made redundent after 11 years.
Having no great interview skills but was very good at what I did, how do I transfer this into other jobs? I'm struggling out here!!!

I have an first interview for the position of Admin Assistant (Sales & Marketing) at the University College London, Residence. I am not sure what they are expecting of University Job as my first experience.
Can you advise me that how to prepare and selling of myself?
Thanks.
