Looking For Work In Later Life
I was given the push from my sales office job after 3.5 years back in April, My job had changed the year before and the increased load of work was getting ever harder to cope with, I was feeling progressively down and fed up with it.
I am in my early 50's now - not a good age to be unemployed! I've always been in office work but now the bias seems to be for jobs with lots of pressure attached and I'm doubting myself now and don't know what to do next. The Agencies tell me is that "it is very quiet at the moment' even on the temp front. Not sure if I should continue looking for office jobs or do something else? I don't want to become de-motivated

Christine,
I fully understand your problem, for I too am in the same boat. I was with my former plc for 18 yrs. It is now a case of Youth against knowledge and understanding.
Since my redundancy, I have had 2 interviews in 10 months. I have pitched at all levels. As for the Job Centre, they are all talk. They gave me a leaflet for the Age Concern Office. Ageism is alive and well in the UK job market, regardless to what is said.
I too have no wish for a high target job, back stage would suit me. I just keep applying for jobs sent to me via the auto alerts. One will hit the target. For hey, the new company will be taking on a talented & experienced worker. Yes it hurts big-time, that feeling of not being wanted. You can and will be taken on by a company that see your skills as an asset. Well that's how I look at my situation. Take heart and just remember you have the tools skills & experience, youth fail to command. Best wishes Douglas.
