Since finishing a PhD 6 years ago, I have been working for a engineering consultancy company. My job mainly involves developing scientific software and undertaking technical consultancy work. I now feel it is time to "move on" to something else.
One potential new career that interests me is software or web development. However, my current skills in this area are for old-fashioned programming languages and do not match those requested in job adverts. In short - I need to expand my skill base!
I have noticed a University MSc course that would provide me with these skills. Is going back to University to retrain a good idea (financial aspects aside), or is it generally better to learn new skills through on-the-job training?
