Working for two? - advice from Karren Brady

One of my colleagues has just been fired and he hasn't been replaced. His work has been given to me, and I've been working hard to get it done but no one has said anything about any financial renumeration. Would I look mean by asking for more now? Should I just sit tight?

Absolutely not. Discuss with your boss immediately the extra work you're taking on,the extra responsibility that gives you and the extra hours you are working. The problem arises if you continue to do the two jobs quite well. For while you might be quite happy to accept the situation as you like the challenge, it is important that you are recognised financially for doing it.

If your company is saving a person's salary - and even if they offer you 25 per cent of that - it is still saving money and you are rewarded. However, if you are not eager to do the extra work long term, you must say to your boss that while you're happy to cover for a while you would like the person replaced and will do everything you can to help find a candidate.

Companies always appreciate honesty and openness from employees.
