Negotiating benefits - advice from Karren Brady

I've been offered a company car which is no good to me as I commute by train. I would rather have the money - is it a mistake to ask for the cash equivalent?

Go ahead. Nearly all companies would be happy to give you the cash equivalent and relinquish the responsibility of giving you the company car. Remember, most cars are a pain for an employer to sort out - they will have to deal with a company that provides the car plus pay insurance on the vehicle. It's worth your while finding out what the cash equivalent would be - before asking.
