Managing the Holiday Hierarchy - advice from Karren Brady

My boss has a large family and takes off every major holiday she can. I don't have kids yet but would like to spend summer holidays and Christmas with my family. When I've raised this she says that 'my time will come', and until then I need to take 'off-peak' holidays. Is this outrageous or am I being oversensitive?

This is quite a difficult one. It is not outrageous for her to want to have suitable time off but there must be some sort of compromise. And compromise means that both of you have to give up something to come to a satisfactory conclusion.

You should mention to your boss that you think 'your time has come' and I would try and approach her in a confident and positive manner rather than in a confrontational one.

Write a plan on how it could work so that if your boss were to take time off over Christmas, you might have New Year off, for example.
