A chance to Shine - advice from Karren Brady

I've been in my job with a financial firm in the City for three years. Although I've had good pay rises, I haven't been promoted and haven't been given the opportunity to shine. Should I move on or should I mention it to my line-manager?

Definitely mention it to your line manager. You want clarity on why you have not been promoted. When you talk to your line manager, you need to have prepared a list of why you felt you deserved promotion and what you would be willing to contribute to the company if you were able to get that promotion.

It's always a good plan to have some ideas of what you might do in that new role. If you are then told reasons why you haven't had a promotion then you need to draft a letter asking what
you need to do personally and professionally to be considered.

Employers are looking for enthusiastic, confident employees and sometimes you can be overlooked if they don't think you want a promotion. Make sure you register with HR so they
can let you know when an opening is available.
